WATERING WITH THE WORD
""but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." — Psalm 1:2-3"
For any plant to grow, a consistent supply of water is not a luxury but an absolute necessity. Water is the medium that carries essential nutrients from the soil up into the leaves and branches, enabling life and growth. Without it, even the richest soil is useless. In our spiritual lives, the Word of God serves this very function. It is the life-giving water that nourishes our souls, refreshes our spirits, and carries the truth of God into every part of our being. Without a regular intake of Scripture, our inner life will inevitably become dry, weak, and unable to produce lasting fruit.

For any plant to grow, a consistent supply of water is not a luxury but an absolute necessity. The psalmist paints a beautiful picture of a life sustained by God’s Word. The blessed person is not like a plant dependent on the unpredictability of rain, but like a tree intentionally 'planted by streams of water'. This speaks of a deliberate positioning of our lives. We are to draw our life from a constant, reliable source. This source is the 'law of the Lord', in which we are invited not merely to read, but to 'delight' and 'meditate'. It is an affair of the heart, a joyful and continuous engagement with the thoughts and ways of God, which in turn becomes our very sustenance.
To meditate on His law 'day and night' is to cultivate a mind saturated with Scripture. It means we move beyond a brief morning reading and allow the Word to soak into our consciousness throughout the day, shaping our thoughts, informing our decisions, and calming our anxieties. It becomes the lens through which we see the world and the standard by which we measure our own heart. This continual watering process is what keeps our spirit supple and responsive to God, preventing the hardness and spiritual dehydration that comes from neglect. It refreshes us in dry seasons and strengthens us for what is ahead.
The promise for such a life is profound: stability, resilience, and timely fruitfulness. A tree well-watered does not wither under the heat of trials, and it yields its fruit 'in season', according to God’s perfect timing. Its life is marked by a divine prosperity, a flourishing that comes from being deeply connected to its source. Let us therefore position ourselves by this life-giving stream, drinking deeply and consistently from the Word of God, so that our lives may be a testament to its nourishing power.
I delight in God's Word and make it my constant source of nourishment. My life is like a tree planted by water, drawing strength and life from His truth.
- 1 Position yourself by the stream of God's Word.
