SENT WITH HIS PEACE
""Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." — John 20:21"
Being sent by Jesus can sound like a call for people who are braver, better prepared, or more publicly gifted than we are. Yet the first disciples received his commission while gathered behind locked doors. Fear had narrowed their world. The risen Lord entered that place of uncertainty, spoke peace, and gave them a future shaped by his mission rather than their failure.

John places this encounter on the evening of resurrection day. Jesus shows the disciples his hands and side, and their fear gives way to joy at seeing him. His commission comes from the crucified and risen Lord. The wounds matter: the one sending them has loved through suffering and defeated death. Immediately afterwards, he speaks of receiving the Holy Spirit, underscoring their need for divine enabling.
The Father's sending of the Son is unique; we do not repeat Christ's saving sacrifice or take his place. We are sent as witnesses who depend on what he has already accomplished. His mission shapes the character of ours: truth joined with love, obedience without self-promotion, and compassion that moves towards people. The gospel we carry is about Jesus, not our capacity to rescue everyone.
Your place of sending may be across a national border, but it may also be your classroom, workplace, household, or neighbourhood. Begin by noticing the people actually before you. Listen to their concerns. Serve without making kindness conditional on a response. When an appropriate opportunity comes, speak clearly and respectfully about your hope in Christ. Faithful witness neither hides the gospel nor uses pressure to secure agreement.
Commissioning also belongs within the life of the church. We need prayer, preparation, accountability, and the wisdom of others. Significant changes of role or location deserve discernment, not impulsive decisions justified by spiritual language. Learn from local believers, respect cultures without compromising the gospel, and recognise that you have much to receive as well as something to offer. Being sent does not make you self-sufficient.
As this month approaches its close, receive Christ's peace before considering your next step. You need not manufacture fearlessness or wait until every uncertainty disappears. Bring your questions into prayer and take the next faithful action available to you. The risen Jesus remains the centre of the message and the Lord of the mission. Go with humility, speak with care, and let your service reflect the Saviour who sends you.
I am a witness to the risen Jesus, not a saviour in my own strength. I will go with humility, serve with compassion, and speak of him with courage and respect.
- 1 The people and places already within my daily reach.
- 2 The fear I need to bring into Christ's peace.
- 3 The preparation and accountability my next step requires.
