KINDNESS IN THE ORDINARY
""Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, gentleness and humility, patience and forbearance." — Colossians 3:12"
Notice the beautiful and active language the apostle Paul uses. We are to ‘clothe’ ourselves with kindness. This suggests that kindness is not merely a passive feeling that may or may not arise within us; it is a deliberate choice, an intentional action. Just as you choose your attire each morning, you are invited to intentionally put on kindness as part of your spiritual wardrobe. This act of dressing is rooted in your identity. Because you are God’s chosen, holy, and dearly loved child, kindness becomes a natural expression of who you are. It is an outward garment that reveals the inner reality of a heart that has been transformed by grace.

This spiritual clothing is not meant for special occasions but for everyday life. The most profound expressions of kindness often occur in ordinary, unseen moments. It is the patient tone you use with a tired child, the unhurried attention you give to a colleague, the gracious smile offered to a stranger, or the thoughtful message sent to a friend who is struggling. These small, seemingly insignificant acts are the threads from which a life of Christ-like character is woven. It is in these mundane interactions that the fragrance of Jesus is most authentically released into your world, bringing warmth and light into the common places of life.
This capacity for kindness flows from a single, inexhaustible source: the awareness of God’s immense kindness towards you. The verse reminds us that we are ‘dearly loved’. When you are secure in the knowledge of how deeply and unconditionally God loves you, your heart softens and expands towards others. You do not have to manufacture kindness from your own limited resources. Instead, it becomes the natural overflow of a soul that is drinking deeply from the well of divine grace. Your kindness to another person is simply you sharing a cup of the living water that you yourself have freely received from God.
In a world that can often be harsh, critical, and impatient, your deliberate choice to be kind is a radical and powerful act of witness. It can disarm conflict, soothe anxiety, and build bridges of relationship where walls once stood. It is a beautiful fruit of the Spirit that makes the Gospel attractive and believable. Today, as you go about your day, consciously ‘clothe’ yourself with kindness. Look for the ordinary opportunities God places in your path to display the gentle and compassionate heart of the Saviour who loves you so dearly. Your simple kindness is a harvest of great worth.
Because I am dearly loved by God, I will clothe myself with kindness today. My simple, everyday actions will reflect the gentle heart of my Saviour.
- 1 Intentionally 'put on' kindness each day.
- 2 Show kindness in ordinary, unseen moments.
- 3 My kindness flows from God's kindness to me.
