AN AUTUMN HEART OF GRATITUDE
""...speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." — Ephesians 5:19-20"
As September draws to a close, we find ourselves in the heart of autumn. The leaves turn to gold and crimson, and the air carries a sense of transition. It is a season of harvest, a time for gathering in, but also a time of letting go. The temptation can be to feel a certain melancholy as the light fades. Yet, faith invites us to cultivate an autumn heart, one that is not sad about what is ending but is profoundly grateful for the fruit that has been gathered. It is a heart that has learned the rhythm of seasons and trusts the God who ordains them all.

The apostle Paul’s instruction is to be 'always giving thanks to God the Father for everything'. This is the defining characteristic of a mature, autumn heart. It is a thankfulness not dependent on circumstances, but rooted in the unchanging character and goodness of God. It finds cause for gratitude in the sunshine and the rain, in the planting and the reaping, and even in the pruning. This constant state of thankfulness is a spiritual discipline that keeps your heart soft and your spirit buoyant, regardless of the external season. It is the music that fills the space between what was and what is to come.
Notice that this gratitude is not a solitary affair. We are encouraged to express it together, 'speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit'. An autumn heart shares its bounty. Your thankfulness is meant to overflow, to encourage and uplift those around you. When we share our stories of God's faithfulness and sing His praises together, we strengthen the entire community for the season ahead. Our collective gratitude becomes a warm fire against the encroaching chill, a shared light in the lengthening shadows. It builds a storehouse of communal hope and resilience.
As we step from September into October, we can do so with this song in our hearts. We 'make music from your heart to the Lord', a personal melody of all He has done this past month, this past season. This posture of gratitude prepares us for the quieter, more reflective days of winter that will eventually follow. It ensures that the soil of our hearts remains rich and fertile, ready for the seeds of the new things God will do. Let your final act of this harvest month be a deep and resounding chorus of thanks for everything.
My heart will be a wellspring of gratitude in every season. I will sing and make music to the Lord for His unending faithfulness.
- 1 Always give thanks to God for everything.
- 2 Make music from your heart to the Lord.
